The TJRA was established in 1998 for all kids to have an equal
opportunity to participate in and learn the sport of rodeo. Each
year the TJRA has grown in numbers and in the amount of
prizes given away. This past year was the most successful rodeo
season this association has had to date. We are expecting much
larger numbers for the upcoming year and future years to come.
The TJRA is a not-for-profit organization consisting of
approximately 200 members. The TJRA proudly calls Durant, OK
their home and has rodeos throughout Oklahoma and Texas.
The TJRA memberships’ consists of cowboys and cowgirls from
the ages of 0-19 who enjoy competing in the sport of rodeo. The
TJRA has 4 different age group categories: 6 & under, 7-10, 11-
14, 15-19 and open co-ed team roping. Eligible contestants are
able to participate in the following events: barrel racing, pole
bending, goat tying, ribbon roping, break-a-way roping, tie-down
calf roping, calf riding, bull riding, chute dogging and team
roping.
TJRA members compete in 15 rodeos throughout the year with
points being carried in 12 of the 15. Each contestant must
compete in 8 of the 12 rodeos and be in the top 15 in their
respective event to qualify for the TJRA year-end “Finals”. The
TJRA Finals are held each October.
The TJRA awarded prizes last year of approximately
$120,000.00. The TJRA is projecting an approximate amount of
$130,000+ for the upcoming years’ 2008 Finals. Prizes for the
Finals include EVENT SADDLES in each age group, each event,
along with All-Around Cowboy and All-Around Cowgirl in each
age group, Reserve All-Around Cowboy and Cowgirl trophy
buckles, Finals Average Champion Buckles (each event, each
age group), Finalist Buckles to EACH first year Finalist, as well as
Top 15 qualifier awards in each event, each age group.
The TJRA awards are funded mainly through donations from
sponsors, concession sales and collections from our gate fee at
each rodeo throughout the year.
We truly believe this is a family ran association. If you have
never been to a junior rodeo, we invite you to come and watch
just once and we assure you that you will be impressed and
hooked. The members and member’s parents and grandparents
truly work hard to make this a family oriented environment.
From a secretary’s point of view, I could not have asked for a
better group of kids (and parents) to have had the privilege to
get to know and to have worked with this past year. I have been
a part of other organizations in the past, and I must say that
rodeo is the only true family oriented sport I have been around
in a while. The time these families spend together is
remarkable. From practicing to hauling down the road, there is
no other sport that I can think of that brings a family closer.
Believe me, there are a lot of hours of family togetherness. In
the end, all our kids are winners by being a part of this
association and by having family ties that will last for a life time.
The TJRA is dedicated to support all of its’ members by
promoting a fun and competitive atmosphere where confidence
and pride not only take place in the rodeo arena, but in the
bigger arena called “LIFE”.
